At the Kitsap Conference for Human Rights in December 2017 I presented a workshop about quilts and human rights. For the workshop I wanted to give the participants a way to be part of a quilt project somehow, and since I am a big fan of English Paper Piecing (a quilt piecing method), I decided to use hexagons.

The ‘blocks’ are pieces of card stock weight paper in a hexagon shape with fabric basted to them. For this project the hexagons are one inch, measured on a side.
My original thought was to use white hexagons for the signature block, and then I realized what a faux pas it would be to have all the signature blocks be white on a human rights related quilt. So I used some fabric in mostly light colors for the signature blocks.
At the workshop I only ended up with a handful of hexagons. I wanted more and the idea of a community art project called the Kitsap Diversity Quilt began to form.
